Inside the Creative Process: Always A Good Time

Last Friday, VOUS Church released "Always A Good Time," a 13-song record by VOUS Worship. I was in charge of creative direction, album and song identity, and set design.

Today, I want to give you a glimpse into my process for tackling projects like this. It all starts with understanding the project scope.

What is Project Scope?

It refers to the detailed outline of what will be included in a project. This includes specific goals, deliverables, tasks, timelines, resources, and budget.

I define project scope by:

  1. Understanding project goals: Align everyone's understanding of the project.

  2. Asking questions: Clarify any ambiguities or uncertainties regarding the project scope.

  3. Listing the deliverables: Identify the creative outcomes expected from the project.

  4. Reviewing past projects: Learn from common challenges, best practices, and lessons learned.

  5. Considering dependencies: Identify the collaborations required between teams.

Project scope helps me gauge the resources needed for a project:

  • Production

  • Personnel

  • Timeline

I leverage this information to lead and guide the team throughout the project, ensuring we stay on track and deliver on expectations.

There’s certainly a lot more that goes into leading a project this size, but it all starts with project scope. If this is a practice you’re not familiar with, start now.
