How to Tackle Unfamiliar Projects with Confidence

Ever faced a daunting project with zero experience?

In 2020, I became the creative director at VOUS. One of my first projects was the vision campaign for that year, titled “Play the Long Game,” which included a 7-10 minute video. What made this project so intimidating for me was that I had to produce a video, something I had never done before.

So here’s what I did:

  1. Started With What I Knew: Part of my responsibility as a creative director is to be confident in the ideas I’m recommending. To do that, I had to start with what I knew how to do.

  2. Use Words: I started with words. Words create pictures = vision.

  3. Link Words to Emotions: I took those words and connected them to one keyword. I picked words that carried emotion, knowing that would help me when it was time to connect them with pictures.

  4. Assigning Visuals: I took each phrase and assigned it a picture.

That’s essentially how I storyboarded the video and noted the main visual and story objectives of the project.
