Want to Be a Creative Director? Here's My Advice

In every email, I include a survey that asks you to tell me more about yourself. I saw this entry come in: “I want to learn how to be a creative director and a decent creative.” Here's my advice on that:

Job Performance:

To increase your chances of becoming a creative director, you should excel at problem-solving.

Whatever creative field you’re in, strive to be the best you can be at solving problems now. You’ll continue to grow, but focus on being great right now.

Organizational Traits:

My ability to excel in these areas also contributed significantly to my appeal to my supervisors.

  1. Recognize your leadership: Maxwell's 21 laws of leadership is a great place to start.

  2. Be organized: Managing people and tasks can be overwhelming.

  3. Have good judgment: Your decision-making ability is central to your success.

  4. Communicate effectively: Clearly convey your ideas and connect with people.

  5. Master negotiation: Do what you can so everyone wins.

  6. Learn business principles: Understand what stakeholders care about: results, budgets, growth and overall health.

Hope this helps you on your journey!
