Weekly Flow: Schedule & Time Blocking

Today I want to expand on a challenge I shared in my H@zy Talk IG Broadcast Channel: my mind has been scattered.

That usually happens when I don’t integrate these two things into my week: purpose and priorities.

I’ll explain.

Back in 2018, when Angel and I were solely operating our design studio, I couldn’t tell what I should focus on first. Do I work on projects, invoice clients, project manage, or just sit here wondering what the heck to do?

Then I read an article. It changed everything for me. It talked about having a structure or flow to your week:

"Many of our meetings could be shorter or include fewer people, and some don’t need to happen at all. Take back those hours for your Make Time instead. But, don’t put it off till the end of the day on Friday — the time you choose really matters. Your energy levels run the course of a wave throughout the week, so try to plan accordingly."

Knowing that, this became our schedule:

  • Monday: Review the week

  • Tuesday: Make Day

  • Wednesday: Make Day

  • Thursday: Wrap up client work

  • Friday: In-house / future work

When I transitioned from the studio to full-time at VOUS Church, I had a similar issue: where do I focus my time? So I went back to what I learned and created this weekly flow:

  • Sunday: Meet with team and define weekly priorities

  • Monday: Meetings + Review project submissions

  • Tuesday: Make Day

  • Wednesday: Meetings + Review project submissions

  • Thursday: Wrap up

Now in 2024, after transitioning into remote work at VOUS and back into our business, I couldn’t decide where/when to focus my time and energy. So I got together with Angel, and we updated our 2018 studio schedule to the following:

  • Monday: In-house work

  • Tuesday: Make Day

  • Wednesday: Make Day

  • Thursday: Meetings

  • Friday: Future work

This season, however, is particularly challenging compared to the others because we’ve become parents, and as much as I want to integrate predictability into our week, it doesn’t always happen. We’ll see how long this schedule lasts until I feel scattered again and need to readjust.

PS: While feeling scattered can be an awful feeling, lean into it. It usually means an adjustment needs to be made 🙂

Rooting for you!
