Navigating the Awkward: Insights on Selling as a Creative

Today, I’d like to share some learnings from the live class I hosted last Tuesday.

I shared this with the students last week: they all played a part in making a dream come true.

Since 2018, I’ve had an interest in teaching and sharing answers or cheat codes. It all stems from my own questions and how challenging I’ve found it at times to find answers to them. Hence, H@zy Talk.

Last year, Angel and I started rebuilding our business after working in-house for a while. I had set some goals, one of them was to sell something under my name – a very scary thing for me. I shared in a previous email how hard it was for me to dream for myself. Anyway, I wrote that down and committed to it, so in December, I launched my very first class.

A total of 31 people purchased the class, and 26 attended it live. We had a blast. I was so encouraged by everyone!

While that moment was a high one for me, those feelings don’t last very long. Here’s what I learned:

  1. If you’re not used to selling, doing it will make you feel awkward and uncomfortable. The key is pushing through those feelings. Selling something you believe in that actually helped you isn’t a bad thing. Reframe your mindset, focus on your why.

  2. You gotta talk about it A LOT. Just because someone follows you or is in your newsletter doesn’t mean they’re gonna buy. It takes a few convos. That can feel awkward too.

  3. Learn to sell! As a creative, you’re in the business of making things attractive and valuable for people.

  4. Write your goals down, commit to them, share them with someone that can hold you accountable.

  5. Commit even if you don’t have the resources. Those will come.

  6. All your friends won’t support you. That’s okay. They’re not your audience.

  7. When I decided to invest in the Digital Course Academy, I told myself and Angel that I would pay it back. Not only am I almost done paying it back, but it was good pressure to have.

Thanks to those who attended, I won’t forget it!

Since I got so much great feedback, comments, reactions, and FOMO 😲around it, I decided to open it up for anyone who missed out. You’ll get the whole package sans the “live” factor: a 90-minute class with previously recorded Q&A, workbook, presentation, etc. You can grab it here.

Hope this email encourages you to write your goals down. Keep at it.
