Proof of Concept Checklist

I'd like to share a practice that has helped me pitch confidently. It’s called "Proofing the Concept." What does it mean?

"Proofing the concept" refers to the process of testing or verifying the viability and functionality of a concept, idea, or project. It involves evaluating whether the concept works in practice, identifying any flaws or issues, and making necessary adjustments or improvements.

Here’s how:

Step 01: Evaluate resource, budget, timeline, and team

  • Do we have the skills in-house, or do we need to hire?

  • Is it within the budget? Do we have the budget to hire?

  • Can we execute it within the timeline?

  • Is the project scope manageable for the team within the timeline?

  • What additional resources will it require?


Step 02: Proof the idea

Use this Proof of Concept Checklist:

  1. Create detailed budget sheets.

  2. Create detailed timelines.

  3. Create a draft or low-fidelity concept.

  4. Develop a mock-up.

  5. Build a prototype.

  6. Leverage experience and/or data.

  7. Run the idea by other departments that may be impacted


It's crucial to remember that the time for testing is before the idea is pitched. Once you've pitched an idea, you've committed yourself to that concept.

Identify the gaps: Mocking up the concept allows you to identify any shortcomings or areas that require improvement, giving you the chance to refine your idea.

For the Client/Stakeholders:

Visualize the Idea: Presenting a mock-up or prototype helps clients and stakeholders visualize the idea more clearly, making it easier for them to understand and provide feedback.
