Working On Your Business vs Working In Your Business

Here’s the working thesis:

How would your business have to operate if it couldn’t depend on you to personally produce results?

According to Michael Gerber, who coined the term, there are two players: ENTREPRENEUR and TECHNICIAN

Here’s the difference:

“If you’re a graphic designer, you may have the technical skill to produce superb visual communication through type, photography and illustration, but it doesn’t mean that you understand what it takes to build a graphic design business that can make a promise to its customers and keep it every time—consistently and predictably.”

Which one do you identify with the most?

Do you feel the tension?

I do too. I want to build a great business, but I also want to make beautiful things. Productivity in my mind is a creative output. So, I’ve had to shift my mindset: some days I do creative work, other days I work on the business. One thing that I’m always doing, however, is building the systems that not only make my work more effective but that outlive me. In that regard, as I do creative work, I’m already working on my business.

Hope this helps you navigate and steward the things in your hands.
